Data Privacy and GenAI

Discussion panel "AI & Data Privacy - Regulation as a brake or an accelerator?" with our Co-Founder Florian Spengler

In his compelling keynote, Dr Tobias Meyer from DHL reflected: "In the EU, data protection is sometimes more important than people" (context: he was referring to a DHL AI solution in India which led to 92% fewer accidents, thereby improving employee safety). This provocative stance prompted our Co-Founder and Head of Business Development, Florian Spengler, to take a slightly more optimistic approach to the topic of data privacy and AI during his joint panel "AI & Data Privacy – Regulation as a brake or an accelerator?"

The discussion centred on the impact of data privacy on AI adoption. The key question of the panel: How can legal risks be minimised without missing out on the potential of AI?

The speakers and guests ultimately agreed that regulatory frameworks can provide helpful guardrails (provided they are specific enough). This allows trustworthy AI to be deployed and utilised by both employees and customers. In doing so, existing guidelines (GDPR, trade secrets protection, compliance) must be adapted to meet new AI requirements. Much of it is already in place: ISMS, TOMs, DPAs and policies. Now, companies need to follow suit.

A warm thank you goes to co-panelists Paula Cipierre from ada and Alexander Garbar from duisport - Duisburger Hafen AG, as well as the moderator Daniil Heinze.

Florian's conclusion on whether AI regulation is a brake or an accelerator: in the short term, it may act as a brake while meeting regulatory requirements, but in the long run (thanks for pointing this out, Paula Cipierre) it is an investment in trust and security that will benefit companies and customers/citizens alike, especially in geopolitically uncertain times.

Anke Rehlinger spoke about generative AI usage in the Saarland State Parliament

Our CEO Lars Moll also addressed the topic of generative AI and data security at TRANSFORM 2025. In this LinkedIn post, he reports on the panel featuring the Minister-President of Saarland and President of the Bundesrat, Anke Rehlinger. Following her keynote, she was asked by Sina Stinshoff whether she had ever used ChatGPT. The reply was that this was currently being heavily debated internally and was not quite so straightforward due to data protection regulations.

➡️ However, since everyone still has their own computer, they can easily give it a try. The state government's communication department would also love to work with ChatGPT.

Bring your own AI? Shadow AI in the Saarland State Parliament?! 😳

Due to a lack of secure solutions, shadow AI is turning into a commodity. Whilst Mrs Rehlinger's inspiring keynote highlighted the right points for digital sovereignty in Europe, sensitive data in AI models is also a vital part of European businesses' cyber resilience. This must not be overlooked in a 360-degree security view. Data that is painstakingly protected by security measures can easily leak out through the use of external AI models.

All in all, TRANSFORM 2025 was a great success, and we were delighted to be part of it. If you have any further questions about the event or AI and data privacy, we are happy to help. ➡️ You can book a free, no-obligation consultation here.
