"InvestAI” initiative launched to invest €200 billion in Artificial Intelligence

The European Commission has launched the “InvestAI” initiative to mobilise €200 billion in Artificial Intelligence (AI) investments. This project aims to foster the development and implementation of AI technologies in Europe and create an open, collaborative infrastructure for complex AI models.

Details:

  • Financial support: “InvestAI” plans to provide a new €20 billion European fund to set up AI gigafactories. These large scale infrastructures are designed to support the development and deployment of advanced AI technologies in Europe.

  • Public-private partnerships: The initiative promotes unique public-private partnerships, similar to CERN for AI. This model allows scientists and innovators to work together on developing and implementing AI solutions.

  • Political support: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasises the importance of AI for improving healthcare, fostering research and innovation, and boosting Europe's competitiveness. She underscores the EU's commitment to using AI as a positive force for growth and prosperity.

Why this matters:

The “InvestAI” initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening Europe's position in the global AI race. By mobilising substantial financial resources and promoting collaboration between public and private actors, it drives the development of a robust and trustworthy AI infrastructure in Europe. This is crucial to achieving technological sovereignty and ensuring that AI systems are developed and deployed in line with European values and standards.

AI in business: Between skill gaps, new obligations and data privacy

A recent study by Stifterverband and McKinsey shows that German companies recognise the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but fail to exploit it fully due to a lack of practical AI skills among their employees. 86 % of surveyed executives believe that their companies could make better use of AI, while 79 % state that they lack the necessary skills.

Why this matters:

The EU AI Act, which entered into force on 1 August 2024, requires companies under Article 4 to ensure that employees working with AI systems have sufficient expertise. This regulation, which applies from 2 February 2025, aims to ensure the safe and effective use of AI systems. Given the skills gaps identified in the study, there is an urgent need for German companies to take action in order to meet both legal requirements and secure competitiveness in the digital age.

Splunk's CISO Report 2025 highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in corporate governance

The role of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) has changed dramatically in recent years. Demands are rising, challenges are growing and, above all, collaboration with the executive board is becoming increasingly important.

Details:

  • Increase in cyber attacks: According to the report, 68 % of surveyed CISOs have seen a significant increase in cyber attacks on their organisations over the past year. Particularly concerning is that 45 % of these attacks were successful and led to data loss.

  • Investments in security technologies: To counter these threats, 72 % of companies plan to increase their cybersecurity spending by an average of 25 % in the coming year. The focus is particularly on solutions for Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to enable proactive threat detection and defense.

  • Skills shortage in the security sector: Another key topic of the report is the shortage of qualified security professionals. 56 % of CISOs state that they find it difficult to adequately fill open security roles, which could compromise the effectiveness of their security strategies.

Why this matters:

The insights from the CISO Report 2025 highlight the urgent need for companies to intensify their security measures in light of the growing threat landscape. Planned investments in advanced technologies and addressing the skills shortage are crucial steps to increase resilience against cyber attacks and ensure the protection of sensitive data.

What else is new

DOGE: Elon Musk has been granted wide-ranging powers as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) to cut red tape and deregulate government. Critics fear he could use this power to promote personal interests and reshape the US political landscape according to his ideas.

DeepSeek & Data Privacy: Seven German data protection authorities have launched an investigation to verify whether the AI startup DeepSeek complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This measure follows concerns about data security and privacy regarding the Chinese AI application DeepSeek.

EU & USA Data Privacy Framework: With the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, data transfers between the EU and the US are once again under scrutiny. The existing Data Privacy Framework, which is based on commitments from the previous US administration, could be at risk under the new administration. Bitkom warns of legal uncertainties and emphasises the importance of data transfers for business and science. Companies should therefore consider alternative legal bases such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
